Foam Symmetry #21

After two years relaunching this iconic surf magazine I’m again focussing on gavinjouledesign… happy to say this is my favourite edition, so ending on a high. If you are interested in Magazine design and production and want some advice feel free to get in touch. This issue has all the hallmarks of a collectable and high quality publication. The cover image is enhanced with a metallic ink background, matt lamination and cyan foiled masthead, the original image by French photographerRead more

Been busy…

Reason for the lack of recent posts can now be revealed, new Foam Symmetry Magazine just launched across the Globe. Super excited to finally bring it to market!  Read more

Barcelona Surf…

An amazing week of waves, snow and sun in Barça, great great people a credit to the surf world generally, so open, stoked and welcoming. Not really a surf destination with consistent waves but if it’s on then not many places have it all like they do, think we’d move there tomorrow if it was more consistent and we hadn’t made a mess of our Europe.Read more

New project…

Foam Symmetry Magazine Beyond excited to be Editing, Designing and generally relaunching this most amazing magazine. It’s a quarterly surf publication that sadly closed it’s doors a while back. Dream job… Still be running the Studio as usual for all existing and new clients.Read more

Finshack Holdall…

Designing this Holdall for Finshack was one of those projects where less is definitely more… simple custom US made Holdall with Finshack red vinyl base with simple logo stencilled on the rough canvas. Simple, rugged and perfect for their core market of discerning surfers.Read more

Vineyard Candles…

Delighted to launch the new Vineyard Candles website for them here in Cornwall, been an absolute pleasure to see them grow from a small idea into the ever evolving company that they are today. Autumn…

Amazing weekend weather, even some surf about, feels like we turned the corner into Autumn, lots of exciting projects in the pipeline so don’t mind the cold… This is a low tide view of the famed Doom Bar in the Camel Estuary, there was a great bottled beer named after this spot which is now sadly brewed up North, progress I guess, but a bit of a branding/credibility nightmare one would imagine. Anyway doesn’t detract from the beauty of theRead more

Retouching

Sometimes time constraints mean you don’t have time to send images out for retouching, happily not something that phases us too much. These Golf shoes went from patriotic tricolour to mono in an hour or so, cost effective in tight schedules and usual time frames.  Read more

Stock

To many the issue of choosing what stock to print their job on comes down to price, maybe colour, perhaps it’s recycled content. Not often is it about quality, here are two very different projects we produced, one printed on very high quality thick cartridge the other on cheap as chips particle board. Both tell many subliminal stories about the brand and it’s ethos. Both have ‘quality’ in oodles… neither would look half as good on a mid-priced Silk. QualityRead more

Hugo Organisation

Another blast from the past, worked with the marvellous Mr Hugo Jackson on variety of amazing projects, from Nick Coleman to Warehouse party flyers like this. No expense spared on the print as you can see, Rave Baloney was well ‘appy with this one. Remembering my Acid House roots… happy happy happy 🙂Read more

Zandra Rhodes

I’ve been on a bit of a nostalgia trip in the loft recently. Digging out a few old projects from way back in the day. Designed this invitation for Zandra when I was at Osborne & Little. She designed a collection for them and spent a lot of time with us in the studio this was printed in house on our silk screen press, didn’t really appreciate what a great facility that was at the time, give my eye teeth forRead more

Land & Burr

This was one of the very first proper jobs I did when I left Harrow School of Art, long time ago now, worked in a small studio in Covent Garden, which at the time was the Shoreditch of it’s day and not the shopping mecca it is now. This project set me on the path to where I am today, although I didn’t realise it at the time obviously. This Perfume sold in lots of London’s leading luxury retailers including LibertyRead more

Fuji X100T

I use three main cameras day to day, iPhone, old but dependable Nikon D700 and this (relatively) new Fuji X100T. It’s a quirky rangefinder’esq digital carry about. It has great colour to the images and is totally controllable. No zoom though which makes you much more creative in the long run, seems to be built like a tank too. I love digital, coming from a time when commercially you were often creatively hamstrung by budget restrictions on film and processingRead more

Finshack

Been working on this idea for a while, took an age to find the right quality of mug that was in the signature red of the Finshack brand, these are proper thick steel, enamelled and along with CO2 laser etched logo, it looks like they will be a big sellers. Great for Camping trips into the wilderness or just around the Studio…  Read more
